Mr. Le Son Hai, Deputy Minister, Vice Chairman of the CEMA, addressed at the meeting

On the morning of July 23rd, 2019, in Hanoi, the General Statistics Office (GSO) in coordination with the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) held a meeting to report on the progress of preparing for the 2019 Survey on the Socio-economic Situation of 53 Ethnic Minority Groups (hereafter called the 2019 Survey on EM Groups), which is expected to start on October 1st, 2019, and unify the plan to implement follow-up work of the Survey. Mr. Le Son Hai, Deputy Minister, Vice Chairman of the CEMA and Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO co-chaired the meeting. Attending the meeting were Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Deputy Director General of GSO; leadership and specialists of the Population and Labor Statistics Department (GSO) – the unit in charge of organizing the Survey; related units under the GSO and CEMA.

The 2019 Survey on EM Groups aims to collect the information on population size, income, socio-economic and housing conditions of ethnic minority households in order to reflect the socio-economic status of 53 EM groups, to compile statistical indicators under the national statistical indicator system and the system of statistical indicators on EM affairs serving the development and making of policies on socio-economic development for EM areas in the period 2021-2025; as a basis to update the statistical information and data system on EM in Vietnam.

At the meeting, representative of the Population and Labor Statistics Department (GSO) presented the report on the progress of preparing for the 2019 Survey on EM Groups. According to the report, the GSO issued the survey plan attached to Decision No. 593/QD-TCTK dated July 30th, 2018 by the Director General of GSO; specified the list of indicators collected through the household questionnaire and commune questionnaire; developed the questionnaires; has developed the information technology infrastructure; has developed the information collection program and the operation Web serving the survey using CAPI, Web form and the pilot survey; has made plan for the pilot survey in two provinces Soc Trang and Lai Chau; has carried out the sampling; has prepared for the training at central level and local levels. In addition, the propaganda for the 2019 Survey on EM Groups is also focused in order to provide information on the purpose, meaning, and basic contents of the Survey to all strata, especially ethnic minority people to get support and active participation of all levels, sectors and the whole society, contributing to the success of the Survey. Also at the meeting, the plan of coordinating to implement follow-up work of the Survey between the GSO and the CEMA and among the relevant agencies as well as the difficulties were mentioned for the participants to discuss, unify and propose solutions to solve in order to have the best preparation for the upcoming Survey.
